I spotted this bird whilst out walking along the beach, and being new to birding thought it might be a water pipit

It's a fair bet your identification is correct. Pretty good shot too. Welcome to birding you're in a nice spot there. I've spent many a happy holiday in Ventnor over the years.
 
Islandergirl has asked the audience. We've had our 50/50. It's definitely one or the other, on the IOW either is possible. Must be time to phone a friend !!
 
Thanks everyone for your comments. He certainly was an interesting little chap.It was taken on the coastal path between Bonchurch and Ventnor, Nedman so I expect you have walked that path.
 
Yes I have, many times. You are so lucky to be there. Knowing exactly where the photo was taken I am now favouring Rock Pipit as I'm sure I've seen them there before.
