Thank you both!

@Procreus
Thanks! In my area (Netherlands) they are very common, and often make quite a bit of noise so they're easily noticeable. That being said they do tend to be quite shy and usually hide in the reeds whenever someone gets a bit too close. This one however seemed to not mind my presence much and allowed me to get down to just 2-3 meters away from it, perfect for snapping some nice photos. I see that you're from Idaho, the other side of the pond, so it's not too surprising that you've never seen this bird before; I've only seen very few American birds!

Based off your description, they remind me a lot of waterfowls in my area. I love when they let me get close enough for a decent picture like this one did. I wish I was into birding when I was over on your side of the globe a few years ago! After looking at some of the common Netherlands birds, you guys have quite the selection. Looking forward to any future pictures you post!

Thank you, that's very nice! I actually just posted a new picture in the gallery right now, but this is a bird you definitely already know ;)
And yes, I agree with you that the Netherlands (or Western Europe in general) has a rather impressive bird diversity. I always thought that I lived in a rather 'poor' area in terms of wildlife, but since recently getting into birding I am definitely developing a renewed admiration for what my area has to offer!
