Pre-digital rarity: Laughing Gull

Pre-digital rarity: Laughing Gull (Leucophaeus atricilla)

Taken in 1992 using a budget lens (and scanned from a print) the quality of this image isn't great, but having posted so many Herring and other gulls commonly occurring in Britain, I thought this 1st-winter Laughing Gull would make a change.

As at 2019, there were 202 British records of this American species.

Thank you for your comments, stay safe and well.

John
Habitat
Breeds on coastal islands, saltmarshes and sand-dunes. Distribution: A partial migrant. It is a year-round resident on the eastern and southern coastline of the United States from Delaware to the southern tip of Texas, throughout the Caribbean, the east coast of Mexico and Central America, and locally on the west coast of Mexico and the north coast of South America. Additionally a breeding summer visitor north to Nova Scotia in Canada, and winters on both coasts of South America south to northern Chile and the Amazon mouth in Brazil. Rare away from east coast and south coast of the U.S. but with records in almost every state. Vagrant to Europe with records nearly annually in the UK (source: Opus)

Great find and shot,John, never been close to one of them.
Thanks Ove, someone else found it of course, and like hundreds of others, I just followed the directions from Birdline. These days I get just as much enjoyment from photographing common birds.

Scanning it from film is quite impressive. I have thousands of 35mm slides in a closet in boxes and every time I get ambitious and scan some in, I remember why I don't (lol). Terrific John and a great capture of this rarity. TFS!
