Gray-bellied Comet
A stunning north Peruvian endemic, this canyon is pretty much the only reliable location for it.
For some reason, it is not nearly as well known as the Marvelous Spatuletail, but when seen in flight, I'd say it's nearly as spectacular, and well deserving of attention, as it is probably at an even higher risk of extinction.
Habitat
Remnant riparian forest (2700 masl)
Location
Sangal Canyon, Cajamarca, Peru
Date taken
Apr 26, 2022
Scientific name
Taphrolesbia griseiventris
Equipment used
Canon r6 and 100-500 mm
Shutter speed, aperture & ISO
1/2500 s f/9 ISO 1600

Congratulations Sir!

You seem to have come up with the First Image of this species in the Gallery and, by extension, the first image to go into the Opus article.

I will get it added soon. It will probably be tomorrow, 9 May 2022.

If I'm not mistaken, there are three comet hummingbirds. Peru has two, but the most spectacular is found in Bolivia: look up the Red-tailed Comet!
