Look, hon! I found another sill log! (Podiceps cristatus)

I was really impressed with the show of strength and balancing skills of this Great Crested Grebe as he swam across a large expanse of water carrying this long "log" for the nest building project. I know we're not supposed to share nest shots, but is it ok with nests still under construction? That morning there seemed to be nothing there. When we took our lunch break, both birds were bringing materials and building from the water. By mid-afternoon when I came back for one last stop at the café before heading home the female was already sitting on the building site forming the nest around herself as she sat there while hubby brought load after load of grasses and occasionally a stick.

Sorry I've been to busy to browse or post lately. Will try to catch up tomorrow after birding (another shorebird survey day tomorrow) and dinner (daughter is visiting and has requested fish - will have to stop and shop on my way home)

OMG!!! That 'log' is huge for such a delicate looking bird to carry, isn't it. Well done him!!!

Hope you're enjoying your daughter's visit Ann - I guess it's not Jan's favourite Rakfisk that your daughter is getting??? 🙃

A very charming Great Crested Grebe behaviour shot, Doc! She doesn't seem all that impressed. :)
