I thought there was something wrong when I saw him crawl out of the water, but then I learned their legs are so far back, they can't walk on land.

No, they are really, really ungainly on land, so you generally only see them when they are nesting. Even then they nest very close to the water.

That's a terrific picture MS... many thanks for showing us the diver - I've a real soft spot for them.
