Common Starling
Guarding the entrance to it's new nest cavity. I can see this tree clearly from my front door step, and I've watched this bird cleaning out the cavity over the last few days. I hope it picked correctly. Although this is a favorite tree for starlings to nest in, it's a dead tree and very rotten, is riddled with nesting cavities, and is slowly giving way to nature. The top third of the tree broke off last year, and Pileated Woodpeckers have chopped the lower portion of the trunk to half it's normal girth. Hopefully it will remain upright till after nesting season is done.
