Costa's Hummingbird
This is a molting male. Scarce in most of Northern California, this is an arid desert species that seems quite out of place here in San Francisco where it was found on 18 August by Nina Bai . Note the very elongated corners to the iridescent purple gorget which help identify this species. I believe the small grayish-white patch on the crown is composed of newly grown feathers still in their sheaths.
Location
Presidio, San Francisco, California, USA.
