Coyote (Canis latrans)

Relaxing in the garden. They have been in the news lately for attacking (illegally) unleashed dogs for which there is a simple albeit unpopular solution. This is the race "C. l. ochropus," sometimes called the "California Valley Coyote." It is a more golden or ocher color, slightly darker and less gray than other races. It also averages slightly smaller. They remind me of African Jackals and are sometimes called the American Jackal. Coyotes have been increasing in the San Francisco Bay Area in the last decades. They reportedly moved into the City of San Francisco by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge.

There was a wonderful documentary, about an hour long, called San Fransisco - Still Wild at Heart about the urban coyotes in SF. I used to love sitting outside at night back in TX, listening to them. I miss that very much. TFS this beautiful picture.
