Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)

I was out in the hide over the weekend on a very cold and windy day trying to get the finches in the late afternoon light (on a perch facing west) when this cutie popped up in the garden and hopped up onto a broken branch off my hydrangea tree. As I said it was late afternoon and this part of the garden is pretty heavily shaded. I didn't expect much as there was seriously no light but couldn't resist trying. Most of the shots were bin material so I was surprised/amazed to open this file and see the detail on the feathers in this one, 1/45th at ISO800! Go figure? It's surprises like this that keep me shooting into late afternoon when there is no hope for a good image but one never knows.

Your efforts were rewarded Deanne. This is a lovely shot of the puffed-up-against-the-cold wee one.
