I have been reading a lot about green woodpeckers trying to hide from observers by shuffeling out of view behind a trunk. I ran into one on Stourbridge common one day, and it immediately flew off and tried to hide. Its attempts to hide form me were quite pathetic, as even without moving from my position I could see a part of it, and one wide eye carefully monitoring my movements. This was from around 30m away. I decided to be content with just that image and moved on from the paranoid dendrocopoid to see if sparrowhawks were around. They weren't.
