Eastern Screech-Owl
We returned to the boardwalk where we found this recently fledged juvenile Eastern Screech-Owl. Note the wispy down feathers attached to the tips of contour feathers giving this bird a decidedly fluffy appearance. Also the well barred pattern of the underparts is typical of juveniles. The two morphs (red and gray) are usually distinguishable in juvenile plumage. This one looks mostly gray because of the down feather color, but the facial disk has a decidedly reddish cast and I believe this bird will likely develop into a red morph adult. Formerly included with Old World Scops Owls in the genus "Otus."

A fabulous picture you've got here Joe, so close too.

Many thanks for showing him to us my friend.

Strangely I had to change the Re-direct for the sci name, as it went to a Re-direct for the common name. Took me a while to work out what was happening LOL. I wonder why it was not discovered before?
