ET's got a girl! (Batrachostomus moniliger)

Sri Lanka Frogmouths -bizarre & unworldy yet strangely cute!! The male is the rusty brown bird on the right.

In Sri Lanka visitors must exit the National Parks by dusk. We were only 400m from the park gate when these birds began to call. Our tracker (all visitors to the National Parks must be accompanied by a local "tracker" ) quickly located the birds as they were stirring at their roost. A small torch was used to gently illuminate the birds & a handkerchief was tied round the flash to diffuse the light of the flashgun so as to prevent any "shock" to the delicate eyes of these nocturnal birds. This arrangement worked well providing adequate images without upsetting these cracking wee birds.
