I love it when the orioles return in spring as their call is unlike any other local bird and reminds me of the exotic sounding birds in Australia. They're extremely difficult to photograph though as they stick to the tops of very high trees and blend into the foliage. I love sitting in the garden and listening to them - very therapeutic!
superb photo, Ed, I agree with you their fluting song is a real pleasure to hear. Never managed a descent photo, they're always hiding in the foliage. top notch, many tfs!!!
I am so frustrated! We've just had two of them fly past while we were on our walk, and they flew into a medium sized tree at the end of a natural hedge about 100 feet away. Super, I thought, as i had my camera on its monopod at hand.
It's like they just went 'poof!' and disappeared. I looked and looked but nothing. I've never understood how they, with all the camouflage of a giant wasp, can just disappear in foliage. In flight they stick out like sore thumbs.
A red deer hind came out of the bush behind us and just stood there watching us for a few minutes while I scoured the tree. She probably thought there was something wrong 'up there'...
