Eurasian Tree Sparrow
Males and females are alike. This is an adult with a pronounced black ear patch, large black bib, and a nearly all black bill. Nine or more subspecies are recognized. This race, presumably the small dark "P. m. malaccensis" was introduced to Ambon and now appears to be established there (Long 1981). Curiously eBird does not flag this species as naturalized in Ambon. Perhaps they also colonized naturally from nearby islands. Does anybody know? They have been widely introduced around the world. We found these sparrows to be fairly common in settled areas. English name sometimes just "Tree Sparrow."
