Eurasian Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola)

Alvaro Jaramillo spotted this unexpected, secretive bird at dusk as it ventured out along the edge of the trail. It is much larger than the American Woodcock from which it differs by having barred underparts visible here. Like other woodcock species it is crepuscular, being most active at dusk or dawn. This location is near the north end of the species's winter range in Japan.
