Exit Stage Right

Exit Stage Right (Ardea cinera)

So... to the conclusion of the story and here he is making good his escape with nothing more than a light snack for his hunger but which did disgruntle me so. Graham (Macswede) got the answer spot on. In the last photo it was one of our Newts dangling helplessly at the tip of this Heron's beak but that's not the half of it... literally. He didn't have one but two! :eek!: From the size I'm not sure if these were young Newts or adults, it's hard to tell. All I know is that come Spring I hope there is still some left although I don't know how many we had to start with, they only became a resident recently. As they live in our garden I do of course think of them as belonging to me and would be rather upset if they were to disappear completely. Thank you to everyone for following the series though and I'll be sure to check the garden regularly in case the Heron returns, which quitee often can be as soon as it gets light and when I'm still in bed.

Great capture and I'm sorry about those Newts. I know all about the depredations of a Heron in my garden pond.

Great shot,Jaff.how about a lifesize plastic version placed near your pond, might just give the little newts a second chance.

A very nice shot Jaff. Can't blame you about the newts either. I think they are adoreable ;)

I can't help but wonder if the Heron isn't spending the evening roosting in or near your yard. I had one a couple of years ago that was always here at first light. It took awhile but one night the moon was really bright and I scanned all the trees and sure enough, it was tucked in for the night.

Congratulations for the shots and congrats to Mac. Thanks for the story. Sorry for the Newt though.
