About the Cats:
There might be a couple that are pets like you get, but most are feral... they live on the bit of land nearby, but are fed by well-meaning (but clueless) people. I've made it very difficult and uncomfortable for the cats to get into the garden without alerting the birds... it's a big improvement, but there's nothing more that I can do without injuring or killing the cats, and I won't do that.
Last year I saw everything from juvenile Starlings to Pigeons to a sick Sparrowhawk carried off flapping in the jaws of cats, none were eaten, just toyed with until the cats got bored. I managed to save one Pigeon from a cat a few months ago, luckily she only lost a clump of breast feathers, caged her and fed her for two weeks... she's been fine since I released her. I almost gave up feeding the birds last year, and I'm dreading Spring/Summer this year.
