PS: thanks re the Swift. I agree that Perrins, though a very eminent figure in his day, seems to have got it wrong. He says Common Swift averages about 25mph in level flight and that bird speeds in general are subject to "wild exaggeration". But according to the RSPB, Common Swift has been reliably recorded at 69.3mph. Wiki has a list of bird speeds here, but it seems a bit hit and miss (does Golden Eagle really reach 200mph?!).
