I dug this photo out of my archives, at the same time noticing that it is now seen by (some?) authorities as a new species in its own right. Formerly a regional sub-species of the Black-crested Bulbul (Pycnonotus melanicterus gularis) and now P. gularis, this bird is found in the Western Ghats in southwest India. The main distinguishing features are that it lacks a crest and has a bright red throat. I saw it again briefly this year, near the border of Goa with Karnataka, but alas couldn't catch it on camera. Will try to get a better one next time I am lucky enough to see it!
