Habitat
Reservoir
Location
Bavaria
Date taken
August 2023
Scientific name
Philomachus pugnax
superb photo with excellent feather details, JB, a real beauty, many tfs!!
Concerning plumage/ sex, they are so variable, but I would go for an adult moulting from breeding to non-breeding ( the black/cinnamon scapulars look adult breeding type rather than juvenile, and the grey ones are fresh non-breeding ones). Male or female, your guess is as good as mine.

Thank you for your answer and infos. I posted a short clip in the ID forum yesterday. You see three different types of plumages/ruffs in the video. I will continue my search for a similar ruff. 👍
I found infos that esp. juveniles show cinnamon tones. Well, my search goes on.

Can’t help (I’m hopeless) but it’s a wonderful portrait, JB.

Thank you. An ID guy linked the perfect ID aid. Ruffs show incredibly plumage beauty and variety. Mountains are nearer to me than the sea. I always try to get some stopover waders but the locations are not easy to reach for me.

Great low camera close-up of this ruff shutting the rest of the world out. Totally focused on its prey. Outstanding JB!
