Foraging technique (Nucifraga caryocatactes)

At least at the stage last month, when the cones were still green, they harvested them by pecking at the stem until it was weakened enough for the cone to be tugged loose. Then they would fly down with it, or fly down and pick it up if it fell on its own, shift their grip and fly away with it to a good burying spot.

They're quite agile for a biggish bird, aren't they Ann.
