Freckle-breasted woodpecker
From the kitchen window this morning.
I HLVG'd this in PS because the verdant green background was too distracting and took away from the subtle tones of this female.

Open scrubland (rice fields)
Location

Date taken
18th July 2015
Scientific name
Dendrocopos analis longipennis
Equipment used
Canon 1100D, Sigma 70-300 DG OS

A beautiful picture you've taken of this little woodpecker.

However, I'm a bit confused Ollie; the scientific name you have used goes to "Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker"(the female's black crown matches), the name "Freckle-breasted woodpecker" has a scientific name of Dendrocopos analis . The female also appears to have a black head and nape.

See the Opus article for Freckle-breasted. If I'm right, your picture is rather better than the current one for a female and I'll use your one there instead, but I could do with some confirmation before making the switch.

Ah! I see there's been a split, that probably accounts for my confustion LOL. Any help you can give me will be much appreciated.

Hi Delia,
I'll not pretend that I'm not also confused. There was some discussion about this with some other birders on my birding journal / blog. I think that they make sense of it all. Here's a link. I hope it helps.

Hi again Ollie

Wintibird has now returned from his foreign travels looking a pretty Costa Rican birds!!

He's confirmed my thoughts on this being the Freckle-breasted, which was split from the Fulvous-breasted a year or so ago..the pre-split scientific name is macei. I've amended the scientific name in the picture details and will now try and add your picture to the Opus article.

Many thanks lad.
