Gold and Ice

Gold and Ice (Carduelis tristis)

We had a terrible ice storm last night and lost electricity about midnight. The sound of cracking branches and whole trees crashing down from the weight of the ice reverberated through the night and morning. There was probably about to an inch of ice coating everything. Ive never seen it this bad in all the years Ive been here. Weve had quite a bit of damage to the back gardens including my lovely tree hydrangea that Ive used as a backdrop for my bird photographs for the last three winters. An enormous White Pine limb crashed down onto it and there is only the trunk and a couple split branches left. Im brokenhearted about it but just have to look at is as an opportunity to do something new and creative with that part of the garden. We also now have a new hole in the garage roof where another large branch came down. Grrrr..

Half of the population of the state of NH is still without power tonight and they dont believe they are going to be able to restore service until Sunday or Monday. Fortunately we have a generator so we still have heat and some lights.

Anyway, whats the saying, When life hands you lemons make lemonade! So after picking up a ton of broken branches and stacking it all ready to take to the dump tomorrow I got out the camera and got some photos of the birds in the ice covered branches. The ice is lovely but too much is deadly!

Nice photo Deanne. We got the ice over here in NY also. We were away in Newport, RI and got back last nite to find ice everywhere and lots of tree limbs down all over yard, but non hit house so we were lucky. Anyway nice photo.

What a shame. But, I'd rather light a candle than curse your darkness ;) I love these images with the ice as a component. I don't get any oportunities like this. But, I bet sitting in the hide waiting is a bit uncomfortable, as well. Sterling image. :t: :t: :t: :t: cheers B :)

Great composition and a brilliant image,Deanne. This will be a reminder of your misfortune in years to come. Hope better weather is coming your way. :t:

Sorry to hear about the icy conditions and the damage done Deanne.
But how gorgeous can a pic be, this is truely amazing :D:clap::bounce::t:

Brrrrr!...it makes me feel cold just looking at the image!!

It makes me wonder just how cold those little birds must be of a night, roosting in the trees as the leaves begin to freeze around them. Food must be hard to come by too?

Extra grain in the feeders would be a good idea?.....perhaps a hot toddy in the birdbath would help too?

Stay warm, Deanne.......and congrats on an excellent shot!

They showed some about this in Finnish news too. Bushes looked just like in your pic. But I didnt catch the Goldfinch or you.. ;)

Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate your comments and encouraging words. WE are STILL without electricity but we are well off with our generator so we do have heat. Things are pretty grim for many people around here. Quite a few homes have been seriously damaged with trees coming through roofs and windows. People are having to go to shelters because it was well below freezing here the last couple nights. OUr town still has 30 streets closed off because of power lines and trees across the roads. But we have power crews coming from different areas of the country coming in to help so hopefully things will start getting back to normal in another day or so.

Thanks again for your encouraging words!

A relief to here you have a back-up generator, Deanne. At least you don't have to tell the birds to "freeze" when you photograph them! (bad joke, I know) Fantastic setting - very exotic with the icicles :t::t:
