Gold-crowned sparrow in flight

Gold-crowned sparrow in flight (Zonotrichia atricapilla)

I was able to catch this little fellow just after he launched from the top of a bush. I believe it's an immature gold-crowned sparrow.

The Nikon Z7 focus tracking actually more-or-less nailed this one. I think it helped that he had landed just 15ft/4m from me so this is almost a full-frame shot. It is a 1.96x (linear) crop from full frame (300mm + 1.4x tc), so the effective focal length is 823mm. It's ISO 3200 from a raw file cleaned up in Lightroom.

Outstanding action flight shot! It's hard to tell immature from winter adults in this species, but it looks more like an adult to me.

What wonderful timing Marc - a super picture.

We don't have a picture of one in flight in The Opus, so I'll upload this one to the article shortly.

Many thanks for sharing it with us.
