Great Blue Heron
Standing motionless on a branch over our backyard creek, this stately heron posed on its favorite perch. This is an adult showing a white stripe down the middle of its crown. Notice the long, loose feathers on its chest. These specialized feathers continually grow and fray forming “powder down” which they comb through their feathers to remove fish slime and other oils as they preen. Largest of the North American herons, this species is similar to the smaller Gray Heron of Eurasia and Africa but can be distinguished by the vinaceous color on the side of its neck as seen here.

Ah!! Thanks for explaining all that Joe, I'd often wondered what the difference was between the Blue and Grey.
