Great observational shot and a splendid image,with in backdrop this great blue sky that enhances the beautiful colours and attitude of the bird! I love it,Ove :t::t:

I am almost sure that the whistling calls of the green and grey-headed woodpeckers are always emited with the beak just slightly opened-as on your photo,Ove...and as for us,when we imitate their calls

Good observation! Whenever I heard woodies call, it was usually the time they started to fly. I only got a calling flicker and it has an opened mouth. But know nothing about the green and other woodies.

An excellent study shot of this lovely bird. They are remarkable birds and I don't know if you have noticed Ove, on occasions if they know you are watching them they will go to the other side of the tree trunk!! Thius really is a cracking shot.

Interesting observation. Maybe it uses the beak cavity as some kind of resonator? The 'laughing' sound always strikes me as carrying exceptionally far.
I've never seen a green woodpecker out in the open like this!
