Groundhog (Marmota monax)

Often called a Woodchuck, Groundhogs are actually a type of Marmot, a genus of large ground squirrels usually found at higher elevations. The Groundhog is unique among Marmots in being a lowland species. They are perhaps best known for the annual "Groundhog Day" celebration on 02 February in the United States. The famous Groundhog "Punxsutawney Phil" emerges with great fanfare each year. If he sees his shadow he goes back to hibernate, predicting six more weeks of winter. A classic motion picture starring Bill Murray was based partly on this legend.
