Hairy Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus villosus)

This is a very aggressive male. He and that wicked beak routinely drive other birds from my feeders. He seems to relish confrontations with Blue Jays, daring them to make him leave a suet cake. Often I will see a stare down going on between them. 9 times out of 10 he wins. Here he even seems defiant against the rain storm he's out in.

He sounds a feisty chap, Bill. A wonderful close up study of him.
