Hawaiian Coot (red shielded morph) (Fulica alai)

This species is polymorphic with respect to shield color. Most had the frontal shield all white but one bird had a dark red frontal shield as seen here. One study found that only about 2% of the total population has the red frontal shield, but other sources give a higher estimate. These red-shield birds also have dark subterminal spots on the bill and more colorful greenish legs rather than the more typical gray of the white shielded birds.
