Hedging his bets (Passer domesticus)

I think that may be why House Sparrows are drawn to hedges. From the top of a hedge they can jump any direction if they sense a threat - either side of the hedge, up into the air, down into deep cover ... all are equally accessible escape routes.

You have shown the bird in a very nice light. The advantage of the hedge seems obvius.
