Sooty oyster catchers are often see around the rocks on local beaches (whereas the pied's are usually on the beach or sand flats). The birds are almost always in pairs and only two at a time. Despite their bright colours most people dont notice them and the first sign is usually their alarm call as they take flight. They feed around the rocks but nest on off shore islands and are sedentary and usually uncommon.
