Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus)

They often perch in trees and like hiding in deep shade. This species is usually a winter visitor to our area, so finding this one in mid July was unexpected. I believe this is an eclipse male based on its all black bill and orange eyes. Females are similar but have a yellow base to the bill and duller eye color.
