Hooded Oriole

Hooded Oriole (Icterus cucullatus nelsoni)

This flashy adult male appeared briefly in our yard before hurtling off into the neighborhood. Historically, these orioles' northern limit was Southern California, but the planting of California Fan Palms into Northern California allowed this Palm specialist to expand its range. The first confirmed nesting in the San Francisco Bay Area was in 1939. It is now a regular local breeder in the SF Bay Area. The California population is assigned to the race I. c. nelsoni which is the most yellow and least orange of all the Hooded Oriole subspecies.
