Hoopoe

Few years ago these beautiful birds were many in our area , it is a long time that i have not seen one of them again .
That time i did not have time to change my lens and after taking this shot with a 17-85 mm lens she/he flied away !
In our language we call her/him Hod Hod , or shane besar , which means Cumb on head !

They're wonderful birds, aren't they Mo!!! It's a long time since I've seen one as well!

You've a super picture of him sitting up the tree - very well done my friend.
 
They are marvellous indeed. I've never had the chance to see one, because they don't occur in my area. But saw them in several documentaries and photos and find them gorgeous. And they are mentioned in a German folksong called "The bird wedding". They are called "Wiedehopf" in my language, derived from an ancient word for wood (widu).
The line from the song says: Der Wiedehopf, der Wiedehopf, der bringt der Braut nen Blumentopf" which can be translated: The hoopoe, the hoopoe presents the bride with a potted flower.
Many thanks for showing this picture and it's a pity, that they aren't around any more.

We now have quite a few in the UK. Even on Exmoor. An interesting bird and a fine record shot Mo.
