It looks like a male House Finch to me. One of the off colored ones but never the less a House Finch. Excellent picture Bob!!!!

Stanley, did you notice the thick black bill.In Peterson field guide to birds,it says, suggesting overgrown goldfinch, except for large blackish grosbeak bill.(Vagrant)

OK delia,I apology to you,Stanley,and anyone else,I might have offended,how ever I still believe.I'll pull the photo,thank you have a good one,hb.

Gosh Bob... absolutely there's no need to apologise... and no need to pull the picture either. I found it very interesting and was backwards and forwards looking to see what I could spot to ID it myself.

I'm pretty positive that Stanley won't be offended in any way at all either.

You've not seen some of the ID bloopers that I've made;)

Hey Bob,

I am certainly not offended. I am no expert on bird identification. Your picture is a fabulous picture and if it is a House Finch, then it certainly is a variant and serves a great role for birdforum in showing how variable this species can be. TFS!!!!

I thank you both, delia, and Stanley for your understanding, your opinions are greatly appericated, thanks again.
