Hummer take-off (Calypte anna)

Hummers are best known for hovering and nectaring from flowers, but I think this one was hunting mosquitoes. He kept dashing out from that twig he was perched on, then dashing back, darting his head this way and that, then dashing out again.

Oh, and special thanks to Stanley for the name of that "weed". Yes, it's Salsify, and our friends were delighted with the information. A customer had asked if they couldn't grow Salsify, a veg she missed eating. Now they know they have it growing wild on the farm, they'll dig some up for themselves and that customer.
