Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum)

This is an inflight capture of this moth on a butterfly bush in my mom's yard. I used the a 1/800 shutter speed and an aperture of 2.8. He was moving really, really fast, and I got extremely lucky with this shot.

Superb detail in this brilliant capture Jim !!! Thanks for sharing.
I saw one of these hovering on a buddleia in my garden last summer, but it was moving far too fast for me to get a decent photo.

Carann... it took me almost 100 shots to get this image. He was moving so fast I could hardly tell what it was. He finally hovered above this blossom, and I just held the shutter release down. The camera clicked off a bunch of shots and this image was one of them. I got very lucky and couldn't believe how it turned out... it was the shot of a lifetime.

Hey Joelle... The moth was actually hovering above the blossom when I took the picture. It feeds on the flower's nectar and probably was ignoring the spider. I didn't even know the spider was there until I looked at the image on my computer. :)

Beautiful shot of a moth I have seen but never managed to catch up with. The Crab spider sits on top of flowers and eats anything it can that comes to feed on the flower. They are common on brightly coloured orchids in the Summer.
