it's still clearly a common gull, Delia!!! happens to me more than often too, many tfs!!!

Like a ghost flying past! Maybe it's like crossing a busy road,you should look left and right before crossing or in this case focusing. I personally find it most difficult to focus on a flying bird with my bridge camera. I have almost given up on that sort of shot.
