I'm hungry

I'm hungry (Turdus iliacus)

We felt very sorry for this Redwing that we met while we were photographing the Water Rails. For some reason it adopted us and started following us around like a little dog. We tried feeding it with the seeds and nuts we had with us but it didn't seem very interested. There were several feeders in the immediate vicinity so it was in no danger of starving. It had a big lump of ice on its tail that was clearly a handicap and a source of irritation. Its tail was in a dreadful state as it had tried to peck the ice off. We tried to get it to let us help but it wasn't that trusting. In the end it solved the problem himself by dipping its tail in on of the small pools of water that remained unfrozen. If it kept dipping its tail in the icy water it was possible that it would soon find himself in the same situation again.
After chasing Redwings around all winter I finally had one come to me so I took full advantage of the situation.

A lovely image, Graham. :king: I hope the little fella was able to have a bite, get the ice off its tail & warm up. ;)
Beautiful detail in this poor Redwing. Such a hard winter for our feathered friends.
Lovely detailed close-up, Graham, great, but rather forlorn, expression too, well done. Interesting story, Graham, it sounds like a difficult Winter for Wildlife, but I'm hopeful that the strongest will survive.
Poor thing!! Hope things worked out for it....a smashing shot you have there!!
