I have a huge picture window in my living room into which this fellow flew. The thud was unmistakable. I found him/her(?) in the mulch, dirt in his mouth, breathing heavily, blinking, wings spread awkwardly. I put on a pair of heavy gardening gloves and scooped him up with a towel, brushed the dirt from his beak, placed him in a box, and waited. His eyes were slits and he was dazed. After about 20 minutes, he began to look around more and more, but still wasn't moving. Then in an instant, he took off and up. I see him many times a day since at the suet feeders! As a result, I have bird-proofed my window with dozens of strands of twine attached to the top and bottom to cut the reflection. It has helped tremendously. Much better than decals.

A very big pat on you back for helping this male Red-bellied Woodpecker recuperate from his meeting with the window and a great job on helping other birds from not hitting the glass.

Welcome to BirdForum! It's a real pleasure having someone who cares about the bird life as much as you do ;)

What a wonderful start you've made to your Gallery today. That's such a lovely woodpecker and I'm so glad he survived that window strike.

Very well done for saving him and trying to improve your set up to reduce the reflections.

I'll look forward to seeing some more of your images Nefdouglas.
