Japanese Wood-Pigeon (Columba janthina janthina)

Sometimes called the "Black Wood Pigeon," this largest of the Japanese pigeons is locally distributed on small islands off Japan. It prefers mature forest where it is uncommon and declining. This species is listed as "near threatened" by IUCN citing logging and hunting as threats. This is the nominate race with reduced pinkish gloss on its head.
