King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa)

Here we see an adult with crop fully distended after feeding. The feast is stored for up to several weeks before the bird will need to feed again. The species is thought to be declining over much of its range from Mexico to South America. It formerly ranged into Florida where William Bartram described it in the 1770s. He called it the "Painted Vulture."
