Ruff in Breeding Plumage

Amazingly ... this
Ruff has arrived
back from his
nesting locales so
early ...
... with a large part
of his ruff still
intact ...
... this is the maximum
residual breeding
plumage that we have
witnessed in our
area ...

... he will gradually
molt into his
much sober winter
plumage ...

... video clip will follow
soon ...

Oooh! The dark morph. I gather the three main colors indicate different levels of testosterone, different behaviors in breeding season, and different chances of breeding success. The dark ones are the most virile and agressive; the brown ones tend to lose out in battles with them, but do get to mate a bit when the dark ones are exhausted; and the pale ones are the "sneaky föckers" that dash in and mate when the others are busy fighting ;)

Smashing capture of this male in breeding plumage. Taking care of his beauty or was he already trying to get rid of it? 😶‍🌫️
