Lapwing sketch 1
Paul S. Hartley

Lapwing sketch 1 (Vanellus vanellus)

There are usually loads of Lapwings at Musselburgh lagoons - typically sleeping. This is pretty easy to get simple profiles of relatively inactive birds. I envy anyone who can get movement and behaviour down onto paper.

This is a little series showing the work in progress. I ve done most of the pencil in the field and have added the colour back home. Here Ive used sap green and viridian to get a feel for the grass. Theres a bit of yellow ochre too.
Habitat
wetland, farmland

Musselburgh Lagoons

Saturday 16th August

Wonderful detail - the grass itself must have taken a lot of patience - and of course tremendous artistic ability!!
