Lapwings (Vanellus vanellus)

I said not long ago that I have not seen a lapwing for years in my area, then driving along the road yesterday I stopped to take these. Sorry for long distance but this is on my 300mm lens so could not get closer. They also seem to have red in their head. Is this their winter plumage?. There were also a flock of smaller birds in the other field, possibly starlings which again I have not seen for ages. I took this flock as well but was even further away, but I think there were other species as well. I did not have my bins with me. Must remember to take them as well?!.
