Lesser Black-backed Gull

Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus graellsii)

I originally suspected this was probably a fresh juvenile Lesser Black-backed Gull, but lack experience with European races of Herring Gull which have a very similar juvenile plumage. I eventually decided on Lesser Black-backed based on the dark centers to the tertials with just a narrow pale fringe, unlike the extensive pale markings on the tip that are more typical of European Herring Gulls. The well barred greater coverts are partially hidden, but the outermost (distal) greater coverts seem to show more extensive dark at base than the more evenly barred coverts on first cycle Herring Gulls. Corrections welcome.

A beautifully detailed image of this gull, Joseph. I am not good at identifying gulls but I would say it looks like a lesser black backed gull in my book. Since last Sunday I have been puzzling about a shot of mine of a similar bird. I would be interested to know what other BF members think.

That's a wonderfully detailed image Joe.

I don't really 'do' gulls, but agree this does have the feel of a lesser. Oh how much easier it is if there's an adult nearby LOL.

Nice work here lad.

A wonderfully clear and detailed study, Joseph.
