Lesser Goldfinch

Lesser Goldfinch (Spinus psaltria hesperophilus)

This is a male. Females are duller and lack the dark cap. Unlike the similar American Goldfinch, Lesser Goldfinch lacks distinctive breeding and non-breeding plumages. Instead it keeps the same plumage year-round. Back color varies geographically. It is typically green with dark streaks in California and Arizona. The dark streaks become broader and more extensive in Texas and Eastern Mexico where the nominate (Black-backed) race occurs.
