Leucistic Blackbird

Leucistic Blackbird (Turdus merula)

I assume it is leucism although not strongly so. Ironically, not 10 metres away was a black rabbit (not that rare but fairly unusual)
Habitat
Woodland/lawn
Location
Center Parcs, Longleat
Date taken
25 July 2008
Scientific name
Turdus merula
Equipment used
Canon 350D, 70-300mm IS
We used to have one that visited our garden which I christened Vic [short for vicar] as it looked as if it had a dog collar on, it also had some white markings around its face.

Good to see another

Cheers for the comments - glad he's got company elsewhere (and seen comments that suggested that it tends to be the male blackbirds and not female that it affects)

Hi there Markulous - Great photo :-D

I was thinking this bird is partial albino rather than leucistic. I 've had a few visits of blackbirds like this in my garden see http://blog.shirlsgardenwatch.co.uk/2007/12/festive-cheer.html and http://blog.shirlsgardenwatch.co.uk/search?q=partial+albino+blackbird. I have also had a leucisitic male siskin see http://blog.shirlsgardenwatch.co.uk/2008/03/spot-birdie.html which really was an odd sight to see. I originally thought it was an escaped canary!

I love to see these blackbirds in my garden :-D

Can you get partial albino? I thought it was either albino or not. Anyway, many thanks for the comment, links (nice blog!)...... and food for thought! |=)|
