Lock Up Your Babies (Larus argentatus)

Morning Peeps,
I'm posting this as a sympathy vote for all the bad press the Gulls are getting recently. We have stories going on in the media of Gulls killing dogs and tortoises etc, and now the silly tabloids are saying that Gulls could steal a baby. I have never heard such a load of squit, as the nearest I've seen to this is a Herring Gull stealing a piece of fish from someones plate at an outdoor restaurant here in Hastings Old Town. Now theres talk of culling these birds, that are supposedly on the red-list.

Great close-up, Mali. Yes, I've noticed the propaganda campaign too. There was a similar approach to Pigeons years ago... welcomed by tourists, fed by little old ladies, saved lives as messengers in Wars, even given medals. Then almost overnight they became "Flying Rats". We overfed the Pigeons, mostly by leaving our crap in the street, now the Gulls are feeding on our crap at rubbish tips (thanks mainly to the 1956 Clean Air Act stopping the waste being burned).

As usual, we cause the problem, and other animals will suffer

Lovely detailed close up Mali, many tfs and as usual the press have nothing better to do.

Ignorance at its height! Ignore these people & do your bit as always. Superb eye contact & detailed head portrait, Mali!! tfs.

A beautiful Gull portrait, Mali, and I completely agree with you. I take a lot of pictures of gulls and have never felt threatened even when there have been fledglings in the vicinity. The Lesser Black-backed Gulls that have colonised the rooftops where my dad lives didn't half make a lot of noise though. But I didn't hear the residents complaining and I got some great pictures.

Love gulls mate, so good to watch them through out the year. This is a beautiful image, suck intelligent birds.

A super picture you've got of this one... a perfect image to celebrate the species too.

It's madness what rubbish the papers print, isn't it. It's the silly season though... nothing else to discuss. Happens every year.

Nice one lad.

Brilliant close-up Mali of this gorgeous adult bird. We have similar press here but its directed towards raptors. Even if the raptor is primarily a carrion eater. I have found it harder to expunge the toxicity of misinformation than it is for the public to absorb it to begin with.

With you here 100% mate, but your smart portrait should raise their profile. If only you had a chance of getting the tabloids to publish it!!!!! great post.
